Sports Social iOS App Redesign

Problem & Context
VLTED’s MVP attracted early users but failed to deliver the kind of instant engagement young sports fans expect. The issues were:
- A slow and clunky onboarding flow that discouraged new users.
- Limited social interaction, despite sports being inherently social.
- A lack of cohesive design — the app felt like a patchwork, not a polished experience.
The challenge: design a sports app that hooks users quickly and keeps them engaged through competition and community.

The Process
I approached the redesign with a mix of user research, system design, and iterative prototyping:
- User Research: Defined the primary audience — fans aged 16–30, highly social, competitive, and engaged in leagues like NFL, NBA, and MLB.
- Onboarding: Designed a streamlined flow so users could register and challenge friends in under 3 minutes.
- Core Features:
- Challenges: Quick matchups with friends, focused on fun and banter.
- Tournaments: Bracket-style competitions where users could join, vote, and track progress.
- Notifications: Added gamified animations for tournament results and predictions.
- Design System: Built a Figma-based mobile system using tokens, variants, and auto-layout for scalability.
- Brand Identity: Defined typography (Inter), bold purple-driven palette, and custom sports iconography.
- Prototyping & Testing: Delivered 50+ interactive prototypes for onboarding, challenges, and tournament flows, refining based on stakeholder feedback.
The Solution Explained
The mobile app delivered a social-first sports experience:
- Instant engagement: A quick onboarding flow that gets users into matches immediately.
- Community-driven competition: Challenges and tournaments designed to spark interaction and frequent return visits.
- Gamification: Micro-animations that made wins, predictions, and updates more fun and rewarding.
- Consistency: A custom design system ensuring every screen felt cohesive, polished, and ready to scale.

Results & Benefits
Designing VLTED taught me how critical first impressions are in mobile UX. By focusing on onboarding and quick competition features, I turned a static MVP into a dynamic, social app that sports fans wanted to return to daily.
