Product Redesign for Regulatory Financial Platform

I designed prototypes for the FCA’s RegData Flexible Collections project (with the Bank of England), improving financial data submission workflows to be simpler, modular, and WCAG 2.2 AA compliant. Working with architects, data scientists, and PMs, I streamlined validation, added contextual guidance, and presented the solution in a live demo to the Head of Data and Strategy.

Problem & Context

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), in partnership with the Bank of England, launched the Flexible Collections initiative under the Transforming Data Collection (TDC) program. The goal: modernize how firms submit financial information through the RegData platform.

The challenges were:

  • Rigid, form-heavy workflows causing friction for firms submitting data.
  • Fragmented navigation and limited contextual support.
  • High cognitive load when handling complex validation requirements.
  • A need for future-proofing — new regulations should be implementable without major UI overhauls.
  • A critical requirement: by October 2024, all UK government websites must meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. This meant accessibility was a non-negotiable baseline for design decisions.

The Process

1. Discovery & Workshops

  • Partnered with technical architects, data scientists, and PMs to map inefficiencies in the current submission process.
  • Identified key friction points where firms struggled to understand requirements and resolve errors.
  • Defined accessibility and compliance as design drivers, not afterthoughts.
  • 2. Information Architecture & Workflow Redesign

  • Reframed the experience around submission journeys (prepare → validate → submit → confirm).
  • Designed clearer structures for content hierarchy, making it easier for screen reader navigation and keyboard users.
  • 3. Prototyping & Iteration

  • Created low-fi workflows to test information flow and modularity.Delivered high-fidelity Figma prototypes, focusing on:
    • Modular components for tables, forms, and uploads
    • Real-time validation with plain-language error states
    • Accessible patterns (contrast ratios, focus states, semantic structures, ARIA labels in dev handoff)
Collaborated closely with dev teams to ensure WCAG 2.2 compliance, including keyboard-only navigation and error identification standards.
  • 4. Collaboration & Demonstration

  • Worked alongside technical architects to align schema-driven UI with back-end flexibility.
  • Partnered with data-science team to ensure validation patterns matched regulatory logic.
  • Presented the prototype in a live demo to Head of Data and Strategy, showcasing how flexible, accessible UX would improve firm experience and compliance.
  • The Solution Explained

    Core Design Principles:

    • Accessibility First – Designed every component against WCAG 2.2 AA standards: contrast ratios, alt text, keyboard support, focus order, and accessible error states.
    • Transparency – Users always knew progress, with validation and error summaries placed where screen readers and sighted users could both access them easily.
    • Flexibility – Modular components meant one UI pattern could handle multiple regulatory collection types.
    • Clarity in Language – Replaced regulatory jargon with plain English to reduce error risk.

    Key Interface Solutions:

    • Accessible Data Entry – Tables and form fields with clear labels, ARIA roles, and inline guidance.
    • Error Recovery – Real-time validation paired with summaries at the top of the form for assistive tech users.
    • Submission Journey Map – Step-based navigation with keyboard-accessible progress indicators.
    • Help Integration – Inline explanations rather than inaccessible PDFs.

    Results & Benefits

    User Experience Impact

    • Simplified data submissions with clearer workflows and inline guidance.
    • Reduced error rates through accessible, plain-language validation.
    • Improved transparency with progress tracking and error summaries.
    • Achieved WCAG 2.2 Level AA compliance, aligning RegData with October 2024 government accessibility standards.

    Business & Regulatory Impact

    • Demonstrated to FCA leadership and the Head of Data and Strategy how Flexible Collections improves both compliance and usability.
    • Created a scalable, modular framework supporting future regulatory changes with minimal redesign.
    • Established accessibility as a core part of the design system, ensuring longevity and legal compliance.
